Since its construction by the priest Dosho in 654, this sacred mountain temple with its focus on the goddess Senju Kannon has been a central place of worship.
From the observation deck beside the main hall, one can see as far as Komaki Castle and Gifu Castle.
The site is beautiful in spring and summer, with somei-yoshino and yamazakura cherry trees, rhododendrons, Japanese irises, hydrangeas, crape myrtles, and more.
The temple is also known by the name “Owari no Momiji-dera” (“Owari temple of maple trees”), and the thousand or so large maple trees within the temple precincts are really worth seeing. Many people come to visit, not only to see the leaves in fall, but to see the “green maples”, as they are called, during the season of new green leaves.
