Teahouse JOAN

Architecture
Joan is a teahouse that was built in Kyoto between 1615 and 1624 by Oda Urakusai Joan, a tea ceremony master who was active during the Sengoku (Warring States) period and the Edo period.
Joan was designated a national treasure in 1936, and it is one of three national treasure teahouses along with Taian and Mittan. The tea room interior exhibits several creative innovations by Urakusai, including an old calendar affixed to the wall (koyomibari) and a window with tightly spaced bamboo slats (urakumado). It is usually closed to the public, opening just once every month.
